I have spent the past year doing my own manicures and experimenting with different polishes and base and top coats. I am no expert, but here’s my conclusions: base coats make a big difference and are a valuable necessary layer. They keep dark colours from bleeding through into the nail bed, smooth out nails so you don’t have to file the bed as aggressively, and make polish stick better and last longer. I no longer buy polishes from the supermarket and drug store, and I won’t pay Sephora-type places exorbitant prices. For me, the best all round polish and choices of colours and least harmful ingredients, is Zoya. But I like Essie for base and top coats. The top coats dry up and become thick very fast, so you end up replacing them often (boo). It’s something to do with their chemical make-up. But I have been using this same Essie First Base Base Coat for an entire year, and am just now replacing the bottle (yay). (Thank you, Amazon, for keeping all my buying records and making it so easy to keep track of purchases.) I have zero complaints about this base coat. This product does everything I mentioned above. There is about 1/5 of the bottle left, yet it has become too thick to use. But one year is pretty phenomenal, especially for a price of about $6.50.
Best base coat I’ve ever had!

Legit the best base coat I’ve bought in a while. I don’t really paint my own nails because it always comes out lumpy or with lots of bubbles & no matter what base coat I bought, it always happens. But this is the first time that I painted my own nails & it came out looking salon quality. I should’ve taken a pic when I freshly painted them so you can really see but I forgot. Either way, this is a great product & I’ll definitely buy it again when I run out 😀
Shiny Top Coat

I hate having to use a gazillion products to accomplish one task, so I gave this a try as a *2-in-1* base + top coat. It did the job. It has a nice, glossy finish, so if you’re looking for a matte top coat, this isn’t for you. It does help my manicure last longer when used in conjunction with a quality nail polish, but is removed easily with nail polish remover. Great quality for the price.
My favorite base coat and treatment

My favorite base coat and treatment. This works really well for my nails, and if I’m not putting colored polish on top I use a second coat of Grow Stronger and it gives my nails a pretty pink tinge. My nails are the longest and healthiest they’ve ever been.

Licensed nail tech and I love the essie polishes. They’ve always made the best nail strengthener, and now they’ve combined base coat, top coat, AND strengthener into one product – superb!
the best base coat I have ever used

I am very, very particular about my nails and what is used on them. I even bring my own polishes to a nail salon. This is, by far, the best base coat I have ever used.
Nice but not my favorite.

Not bad. I may not buy it again, as other formulas (notable Seche and Revlon) wear better on my nails. Everyone’s nails (like skin or hair) is unique, so I would certainly recommend testing several brands. I have not tried this with an Essie top coat, though. I have tried other Essie base coats and prefer this one.
Pretty color and effective

I applied two coats of this and then used Seche Vite top coat, and my nails feel a lot stronger! Love the color too – it’s a translucent pinkish beige. Not too pink like Mademoiselle but not too beige either. Very natural color which fits all skin tones. Good basic go-to polish for nail protection. I would use this as a base coat as well, but the color is so pretty it’s nice enough to wear on its own. I bought this for $9 on Amazon but I see it now for $10. I feel the perfect price is $7 but the product itself is very good. Far better than the expensive polishes you get for a lot more at department stores.
but as long you don’t go try to something like wash your hair afterwards

OPI is the popular polish in salons in my city. I thought this was THE way to go when I started doing my nails at home instead. Negative. Essie dries so much faster. The polish still needs time to cure for a few hours, but as long you don’t go try to something like wash your hair afterwards, you will not have an issue. Turning a door knob 20 minutes after painting your nails with Essie is not a scary situation. Love this stuff. This bottom coat is great. It sets fast so you can get to painting. The green tint is extremely light but still visible but I’ve used it with white tips before and it looks great. I just went over the whole nail with a cloudy second layer for a “polished” effect. Naked nails with nail art might not look as well. Also, this does not chip nearly as fast. Since swapping to all Essie nail paints, I can go 7-10 days without repainting.

This product does exactly what it says it will do!. I have exceptionally weak nails and this product helps provide a smooth surface and a little bit of strength. It gives your polish a great base for coverage and smoothness. I think this one is my favorite!! My nails are about as bad as they get. Weak, split and peel constantly. This product gives you a great surface to work with. Your nails will be transformed!!!
